9 Common Questions Answered Before Starting Your Jiu-Jitsu Journey
So, you’re thinking about starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)? That’s awesome! Whether you’re looking to get in shape, learn self-defense, or challenge yourself mentally, BJJ is an excellent choice. If you’re new to the sport, you probably have a lot of questions. Here are some common concerns and answers to help you feel prepared before stepping onto the mats at Dark Horse Combat Club.
1. Do I Need to Be in Shape to Start Jiu-Jitsu?
No! One of the great things about Jiu-Jitsu is that it’s for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Training will naturally improve your endurance, flexibility, and strength over time. Just start at your own pace and focus on consistency.
2. What Should I Wear to My First Class?
If it’s a gi class, you’ll either need to bring a gi or borrow one from the gym. For no-gi classes, a rash guard and athletic shorts (without zippers or pockets) are recommended. If you’re unsure, reach out to us at Dark Horse Combat Club for guidance!
3. Will I Get Hurt?
Like any physical activity, there’s always a risk of injury, but Jiu-Jitsu is designed to be a safe and controlled martial art. As long as you listen to your instructors, tap when necessary, and train responsibly, you can minimize the risk of injury.
4. How Often Should I Train?
This depends on your schedule and goals. Beginners typically train 2-3 times per week to build a solid foundation. As you progress, you might increase your frequency based on your personal commitment and recovery ability.
5. Do I Need Prior Martial Arts Experience?
Not at all! Jiu-Jitsu is beginner-friendly, and many people start with no prior experience. The fundamentals are designed to be accessible to everyone, and our instructors will guide you step by step.
6. What Should I Expect in My First Class?
Your first class will likely include a warm-up, drilling techniques, and light positional sparring (if you’re comfortable). Expect to learn a lot and possibly feel a bit overwhelmed—but don’t worry, everyone starts somewhere! The BJJ community is welcoming, and we’re here to help you grow.
7. Is Jiu-Jitsu Good for Self-Defense?
Absolutely. BJJ is one of the most effective self-defense systems, teaching you how to control opponents and escape dangerous situations using technique rather than brute strength. We are focused on teaching our students useful skills that they can use if have to in an unfortunate situation. Every Tuesday we have free women’s class that can help you gain confidence and learn the basics of self-defense!
8. How Long Does It Take to Get a Black Belt?
Jiu-Jitsu takes time and dedication. Unlike some martial arts, where black belts can be achieved in just a few years, BJJ belts are earned through hard work, knowledge, and time on the mat. On average, it can take 8-12 years to reach a black belt, but the journey itself is rewarding.
9. What Are the Benefits of Training Jiu-Jitsu?
Beyond learning self-defense, BJJ improves physical fitness, mental toughness, problem-solving skills, and confidence. Plus, the friendships and camaraderie built on the mats make training even more enjoyable.
