Today’s post brings you a lovely little documentary from the team at Primal MMA in Canada. It tells the story of Chirag, a white belt in jiu jitsu as he trains for his first competition. It’s a bit different than your typical BJJ film or documentary. It’s not a highlight of stars like Buchecha or Galvao as they compete at the highest levels. Instead, it focuses on a normal guy, Chirag Dave, as he trains for his first tournament.

He’s definitely taking it very seriously, which is great to watch. There’s a bit of a plot twist / kicker that doesn’t show up until almost 20 minutes into it that gives an entirely different complexion to his training. The film also gives you a great sense of what it’s like to train in a BJJ academy, and in particular what it’s like to really get ready for a tournament. Note that we don’t really feel competition is essential for everyone, but it certainly does great things for those that choose to do it. This documentary gives a great sense of what it’s like.
